Meeting
|
June 1-3, 2001

Digital Partners (DP), in conjunction with
the World Bank and the Vidya Pratishthan's Institute of
Information Technology (VIIT), will host a workshop in Baramati,
India entitled Achieving Connectivity
for the Poor in India. (Please see Final
Agenda below.) This three day event will examine how
experiments with expanding connectivity for the poor can
bescaled-up with sustainable sources of financing so that
information communication technology (ICT) can become a
tool for the empowerment of the poor, rather than another
tool for their exclusion from economic growth and decision-making.
(See Relevent Documents below.)
The roughly 100 invited participants represent a variety
of sectors and interest areas—including the donor community,
NGOs, venture capitalists, IT entrepreneurs, as well as
government officials—all of which bring important perspectives
and experiences to the table. (See below for a list of Speakers
and Panelists.)
The objective is to foster a fuller understanding of how
ICT can best be utilized to empower the poor. More specifically,
the workshop is designed to emphasize the role of the social
entrepreneurs using ICT to open new profit-making and financially
sustainable avenues for the poor in markets, e-commerce,
and information sharing while at the same time encouraging
synergistic linkages among shareholders who are essential
to future initiatives engaging poor communities. By the
end of the workshop, participants will have laid the groundwork
for creating specific strategies for scaling-up innovative
ideas, and will have created the partnerships necessary
for putting these strategies into action.
A unique aspect of this year’s gathering is that participants
will be able to:
